Body Systems
Unit Essential Question(s): How do the digestive, respiratory, and circulatory systems work together to sustain life?
Concept: Digestive System
LEQ: How does the liver help your body stay in balance?
LEQ: How does your body breakdown food mechanically and chemically?
LEQ: What are the functions of the major structures of the digestive system?
Mouth- mechanical and chemical breakdown of food
Esophagus- movement of food to stomach
Stomach- stores and breaks down (both mechanically and chemically) food
Liver- helps break down fats, separates waste, and breaks down toxins
Small Intestine- completes chemical breakdown of food and absorbs nutrients
Large Intestine- absorbs salt and water and starts solid waste production (makes poop)
Rectum- stores solid waste until expelled from body

Concept: RESPIRATORY System
LeQ: What are the functions of the major organs of the respiratory system?
Mouth- air enters and exits body
Windpipe (Trachea)- moves air to and from the lungs
Lungs- exchange carbon dioxide and oxygen
Bronchioles- tiny tubes in the lungs
Aveoli- tiny air sacs in the lungs

Concept: Circulatory system
leq: how does blood move through your body?
Atrium- the two upper chambers on each side of the heart that receive blood from the veins and in turn force it into the ventricles.
Ventricle- the two lower chambers on each side of the heart that receive blood from the atria and in turn force it into the arteries.
Arteries- a blood vessel that conveys blood from the heart to any part of the body.
Vein- branching vessels or tubes conveying blood from various parts of the body to the heart.
